Once you get your food dehydrator, it can be a little overwhelming to decide how to use it effectively and often. Instead of simply putting the dehydrator on the counter or in the back of a cupboard, never to be used again, here are two basic recipes you can use in your dehydrator: jerky and energy bites.

Basic Jerky Recipe

What You Will Need:

1 T brown sugar
1 t liquid smoke
3/4 c. soy sauce
1/2 t chopped garlic
1/2 t grated ginger
A pinch of ground pepper
1 t salt
1 pound meat strips (beef and venison are best)

What You Need to Do

Blend the ingredients together and allow the mixture to sit on the counter for a few minutes. Place the meat in the marinade and allow to marinate for at least an hour, though overnight is best.

Once the mixture is done marinating, place the meat in the food dehydrator and allow to dry as directed.

Energy Bites

What You Will Need:

1/2 c. prunes
1/2 c. raisins
1 c. dried dates
1/2 c. dried figs
1 c. crushed walnuts
1/2 c. sunflower seeds
3 T. lemon juice
1 c. shredded coconut

What You Need to Do

Take a food processor and grind the prunes, figs, raisins, and dates. Then take the seeds and the nuts and blend them with the juice and add the ground up mixture, forming these into balls.

Dry the balls in the dehydrator for about five hours, then roll the balls in coconut, if desired.
